New Zealand has developed a specialisation for innovative niche production in engineering and manufacturing. In the South Waikato this sector is already building a reputation for excellence and has started to create more opportunities for innovation and continual improvement. A prior focus on forestry, agriculture and hydro developments had led to the existence of an exceptionally skilled and diverse manufacturing base in the South Waikato District.

South Waikato’s current engineering sector offers skills, innovation and experience second to none, and includes a significant number of businesses who enjoy exporting success and/or deliver unique products and services to customers throughout New Zealand.

The same competitive cost advantages offered by the District’s centrality and rural location are available to new manufacturing and industrial enterprises, with the existing strength in the sector providing all the services and support those new industries might require, ensuring their success.  

The Trade Training Centre was also developed to support the manufacturing sector. The centre provides an environmnet for school leavers to train in the industry, free of charge, with a programme designed to suit the specific needs of the industry.
