Arapuni

The Waikato River Trail is located in Arapuni and highlights the regions environmentally friendly approach combining recreational and economic benefits to the District. Originally a project driven by South Waikato District Council it has now become a viable venture in its own right. A network of over 30km walks along river and lake edges with minimal environmental impact.  The Waikato River Trail will ultimately extend 100km along the banks of the Waikato River and six lakes in our District, with the first section – from Arapuni village to Jones’ landing on the shore of Lakes Arapuni.

The Arapuni swing bridge which is suspended 54 metres above the power station is 152 metres long and has a slope of 8 metres. Although not for the faint hearted those who do venture over the bridge are awarded with spectacular views of the scenic gorge. Visitors are treated to impressive geological features. The cliffs to the right of the landing are formed by ignimbrite blocks which are vertically fissured by cooling stresses.

Jones’ landing provides the local community and visiting tourists with great boating, fishing, picnic and swimming opportunities. Several species of Duck, pheasants and quail can also be hunted during the season.
