Putaruru

Putaruru is a fisherman’s dream- the fishing experience is not only rewarding, but picturesque and relaxing. There are no less than 20 rivers packed with trout within a 20km radius of the township.

Putaruru has a great variety of walks – long or short – and they all feature the particular beauty of the region. Visitors to Putaruru are invited to wander Te Waihou walkway to view the Blue springs. The crystal clear spring water is bottled in town, and sold commercially as ‘Pump’ water, sourcing 70% of New Zealand’s bottled water. The walkway covers a distance of 4.7km and takes an average walking time of 1.5 hours each way. In some areas the track has been benched and steps constructed through the gorge area.

The water in Te Waihou is crystal clear and
clean and on a summer’s day, the springs are an impressive ‘blue’ colour, indicative of the clarity and purity of the water. The Waihou Stream is totally spring fed. Water fro the Mamaku Plateau takes anywhere between 50-100 years to reach the Blue Spring Water and flows from the Blue Spring at a rate of 42 cubic metres per minute. The water temperature of the Blue Spring is a constant 11 degrees Celsius, come winter or summer.
