Tirau

The Tirau Information Centre is a prime example of the enterprise of the South Waikato District community. What began as an idea for new public toilets ended in the creation of one of the most striking information centres in New Zealand. The dog was designed and built by the Tirau community with funding from South Waikato District Council to complement the internationally famous sheep that houses a wool and craft shop and is a key landmark of the bustling Tirau shopping centre.

The Information centre is beautifully decorated with wall to wall murals depicting the South Waikato landscape and contains all the information you will ever need to know on how to have a great time in the district.

Tirau is the northern visitor gateway to the district as well as being a tourist destination in its own right. The great shopping, many cafes, ‘Castle Pamela’, giant sheep and landmark dog-shaped Visitor Information Centre all deliver temptations that many of the thousands of domestic and international visitors travelling daily along State Highway One find impossible to resist.

Tirau offers a host of activities, including golfing and white water rafting.  It is home to some of the best antique and craft shops in New Zealand. Situated in the town are niche shops that sell a range of goods from genuine European cuckoo clocks to traditional teddy bears!Tirau has a picturesque golf course, several public tennis courts, bowling greens and a lively horse racing industry.
