Provides population projections and economic analysis of the South Waikato ‘economy’ to present an understanding of the impact economic and demographic change could have on the South Waikato region, and was referred to when refreshing the Economic Development Strategy.
To sustain growth in the South Waikato District economy requires re-invigorating the core primary industries (farming, forestry, processing), initiating new industries, or a combination of both these strategies. The analysis considers how this might be achieved and estimates the regional gains from doing so.
The requirements for growth in rural regions can be summarised as follows; • Quality education • Workplace development and up skilling via tertiary organisations • Good infrastructure and quality government • Quality of life attributes such as health and fitness, emergency services, police, transport, childcare and environmental standards • Adoption and promotion of modern technologies such as broadband, wireless ect. Common in urban areas.
